All of the desirable traits of an Huacaya alpaca — from its disposition to its appearance and how well it cares for its babies — come down to breeding
Every alpaca breeder is different. At Rosehaven Farm, our focus is on mid-fawn to brown huacaya. To us, the inherent value of the animal is its ability to produce a beautiful fleece.
That’s why we set out our breeding goals with fleece in mind. We strive for:
- Fineness of 16-18 microns
- Density of 50+ follicles per mm
- Staple length <120mm/year
- Consistent colour and micron
- Bright
- Excellent crimp style
Beautiful fleece from healthy, happy alpacas
To achieve the beautiful fleece we’re after, our animals need to be in the best possible condition. Here’s what we focus on to make that happen:
- Disposition: happy, healthy, complaint alpacas generally give birth to babies (known as cria) with similar temperaments
- Fertility: our breeding females are highly fertile, have easy births, lactate efficiently and wean early
- Size: we aim for a solid mid-size frame (60-70kg for females and 70-80kg for males
- Good looks: an appealing head size and neck length and a mid-fawn to brown colouring
