A Chill in the Air, but Warmth in Our Hearts – A Letter from Mitzy

Published on Monday 2 June 2025 by Pamela Pratt

Dear Farm Friends,

I felt it in my ears this morning—the first real chill of autumn. The kind that makes your breath puff like tiny clouds and the grass sparkle just a little longer under the sun. The kind of morning where you hope Pam’s got carrots in her pocket (she did).

I’m Mitzy, your resident greeter, guide, and gentle nudge for pats and snacks here at Rosehaven Farms. As the seasons shift, things start to slow down just a touch. The dahlias have finished their final dance, and Pam’s been out there cutting back the stems and whispering, “Sleep well,” like a gardener poet. I watched her while I chewed thoughtfully on some hay. (Multitasking is a donkey specialty.)

This week we had some lovely visitors—a couple from Adelaide who brought their grandkids. The littlest one had the fluffiest hat I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t help but nuzzle it. She giggled and told me I smelled like the hay shed. (I took it as a compliment.)

The alpacas stood tall and proud while the goats, as usual, turned everything into a bouncing contest. Ricky, ever the watcher, kept an eye on things from the paddock edge. She doesn’t miss a thing, that one.

As for me? I stood very still for gentle strokes and soaked in the warmth that only comes from a kind hand and a quiet moment. The kind of warmth that stays with you, even when the wind picks up.

Until next time,

Stay warm and don’t forget to pat a donkey if you get the chance.

With love (and slightly muddy hooves),
Mitzy
Your Autumn Ambassador at Rosehaven Farms
